Privacy Policy
Cheddar doesn't track anyone. No accounts, no ads, no analytics — and no internet access at all. Everything runs on your device. The only way a photo ever leaves the phone is when a grown-up chooses to share it, and this page explains exactly how that works.
No accounts
Cheddar has no sign-up, no login, and no user profiles. We never ask for a name, email, phone number, or any personal detail to use the app.
No ads, no analytics, no tracking
The app contains no advertising, no analytics, and no third-party tracking SDKs of any kind. We don't build profiles, we don't measure your child's behavior, and there is nothing to opt out of because there is nothing running.
Your photos stay on the device
Photos live inside Cheddar, in the app's own private storage on your phone — not in your camera roll or any cloud photo library. Cheddar has no internet permission, so the app itself cannot upload them anywhere, and Cheddar's data is excluded from device backups and phone-to-phone transfers. There are exactly two ways a photo moves anywhere at all, and both sit behind the grown-up math gate:
- Saving to the camera roll. A grown-up can copy a photo, or a rendered video, into the phone's own camera roll — one at a time from the photo's tools, or all at once from Settings. From then on that copy is an ordinary photo on your phone, under your control.
- Sharing. A grown-up can explicitly choose to share a photo, or a rendered video, using your device's normal share sheet. Cheddar hands the photo to the app the grown-up picks (messages, email, and so on), and nothing is shared unless an adult taps share.
Microphone
The microphone is used for exactly two things, and nothing else:
- Listening for the word “cheese” during the voice-shutter countdown. This is handled by your device's built-in speech recognition during that short window only.
- Recording Story narrations, which are saved only on the device.
Tell Me — descriptions and voices
When Cheddar describes a photo out loud, both the description and the character voice that reads it are generated entirely on your device. The photo is never sent to Google or any other AI service — nothing about it leaves the phone. To describe a photo, Cheddar looks for everyday objects, colours, and whether there is a face or a smile in the picture. It can tell that someone is smiling; it cannot tell who, and it keeps no record of faces. The feature is still optional: a grown-up switches it on or off in the settings.
Explorer and the games
Explorer and the photo games run entirely on your device, just like the rest of the app. When your child photographs a hunt target, Cheddar checks the picture using on-device recognition — nothing is uploaded. It recognizes everyday objects (chairs, toys, animals, and the like), colours, and smiles. It never identifies people, and it does not build or keep any face data.
Deleting things
Parents and kids can delete any photo — along with its story and description — right inside the app. Because photos live inside Cheddar, uninstalling the app or clearing its storage deletes them too, along with every story and setting. Settings says so plainly, right next to the Save All button — so save the keepers to your camera roll first. Photos already saved to the camera roll stay on your phone like any other photo.
Children's privacy (COPPA)
Cheddar is designed for young children, and it is built so that it does not collect personal information from them. There are no accounts, no tracking, and no internet access — no photo of your child is ever sent to an AI service or any third party. The only action that can move a photo off the device, sharing, is controlled by a parent or guardian behind a math gate. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children, and we do not direct any data collection at them.
